On Wednesday 10th March 2021 the Parity Group will be hosting the 6th installment of the Parity Talks: the annual event dedicated to discussions around gender, equity, diversity and belonging within the disciplines of architecture and spatial planning. This year’s event will be focussed on a collective questioning of ‘What’s Good?’
Together we will discuss our current understanding of good practice, who decides what is good, and the problems of education based on ideas of excellence. Joined by Womxn in Design from Harvard GSD, Claiming Spaces from TU Vienna, and the Parity Groups at EPFL and TU Munich, the Parity Talks 6 will be acting as the departure point for a season of digital events across the five institutions, propelling further debates on gender, equity, inclusion and belonging.
The programme of the 10th will include a morning of input lectures by guest speakers, which will be followed by two round table discussions in the afternoon. Parity Talks jährten sich zum zweiten Mal am Internationalen Frauentag
Am 8. März 2017, dem Internationalen Frauentag, fanden bereits zum zweiten Mal die Parity Talks am Departement Architektur statt. Organisiert wurde die Veranstaltung, wie schon vor einem Jahr, von Mitgliedern der Parity Group, einer Bottom-Up Initiative von Assistentinnen und Assistenten. Vorträge und Workshops boten den Rahmen für eine üffentliche Debatte zu Fragen der Gleichstellung und Diversität im Kontext der Ausbildung und des Berufslebens von Architektinnen und Architekten in der Schweiz und in anderen Ländern. In fokussierten Diskussionsrunden wurden Strategien und Werkzeuge zur Erzielung der Gender-Parity (Gleichstellung von Mann und Frau) an unserem Departement entwickelt, insbesondere zur Anhebung des ausserordentlich tiefen Professorinnen-Anteils.
Ziel der Veranstaltung war es, auf die Umsetzung konkreter Massnahmen im Rahmen des 2014 verabschiedeten ETH Gender Action Plan hinzuwirken. Unter den mehr als 60 Teilnehmenden waren Entwerfer_innen, Studierende und Mitarbeitende der ETH Zürich und anderer Schweizerischer Hochschulen, Fachleute aus den Bereichen Gleichstellung und Diversity, teils auch aus üffentlichen Betrieben, sowie Vertreter_innen internationaler Grassroots-Gruppen aus Schweden, Australien und den USA, die über ihr Engagement berichteten. Abgerundet wurde der Tag durch einen Abendvortrag von Martha Thorne, geschäftsführende Direktorin des Pritzker Preises und Professorin in Madrid. Sie analysierte die gesellschaftlichen Ursachen für die anhaltende Diskriminierung von Frauen in der Architektur und präsentierte kreative Ansätze zu deren überwindung. Die Rektorin der ETH Zürich, Prof. Sarah Springman, stellte in ihrem Grusswort nochmals die zentrale Bedeutung von Gleichstellung und Diversität für die Zukunft unserer Hochschule heraus und verwies gleichzeitig auf die besondere historische Stellung unseres Departements, an welches Flora Ruchat-Roncati im Jahre 1985 als erste ordentliche ETH-Professorin berufen wurde. Mit Blick auf diese damals sehr vorausschauende Entscheidung bekräftigen die Parity-Delegierten erneut ihre Forderung nach einer zügigen Umsetzung konkreter Massnahmen, so dass das Departement seiner Vorbild-Funktion gerecht werden kann.
Parity Talks took place for the second time on International Women’s Day
On March 8, 2017, International Women’s Day, Parity Talks took place at the Department of Architecture for the second time. This year and last, members of the Parity Group – a bottom-up initiative set up and maintained by assistants – organized the event. Lectures and workshops sparked a public debate on gender equality and diversity in architectural education as well as in the profession in Switzerland and abroad. Four roundtable discussions developed strategies and tools for achieving gender parity (equal opportunities for men and women) in our department – especially towards increasing the unusually low number of female Professors.
The event’s goal was to structure and support the implementation of concrete measures within the framework of ETH Gender Action Plan, introduced in 2014. Among the 60 participants were architects, students and staff members from the ETH Zurich and other Swiss universities, gender equality and diversity experts – including from public employers such as the City of Zurich – as well as representatives of grassroots groups from Sweden, Australia, and the US, who reported about their engagement. An evening lecture by Martha Thorne, executive director of the Pritzker Prize and Dean of the Architecture School at IE University, Madrid, rounded off the day. Thorne analyzed the social causes for the persistent discrimination of women in architecture and proposed means to overcome this situation. (http://www.video.ethz.ch/events/2017/gta.html)
During her address, the Rector of the ETH Zurich, Prof. Sarah Springman reiterated the vital importance of gender equality and diversity for the future of our institution. At the same time, she highlighted the special role played by our Department in the past: Flora Ruchat-Roncati’s appointment to the D-ARCH as the ETH’s first female professor in 1985. With the forward thinking of that first appointment in mind, the Parity Delegates call for swift implementation of concrete measures for gender parity as reaffirmation of the department’s commitment to both sexes.
